Starting your vegetable garden

Who wouldn’t want to grow their own vegetables, fruit & herbs. It’s incredibly satisfying and nutrtious eating food grown directly from your garden. I do it all the time.

…So how do you do that? Good question which I’m going to help you with

Items needed

  • Space

    Start by measuring the space required

    In your yard, garden beds, comunity garden

  • Tools

    For gardening - trowel / spade, fork, mini pick, cone shape tool, narrow spade with number on it, tape mesuare

  • Soil

    Assess if clay need gypsum

  • Fertilizer

    Can be home made (compost) or purchased.

  • Water

    Hose or watering can. Hose with spray handle or irrigation set up

  • Plants or seeds

    Can grow these yourself in mini green houses or purchase punnets from garden outlets.

General tips

  • Check that garden site is in sunny position.

  • It is a good idea that the space stay clear of large trees.

  • Check that water is accessible.

  • Check the soil. If its clay it will need gypsum added and fertiliser.

  • Use PPE hat, sunscreen, drink, gloves.

  • Read instructions on items before your project

Build the garden bed

Frame - You can measure and use wood or use garden bed kits. There are different heights meaning ease of work for higher ones but also more soil to fill 

Fill garden bed

Cover base to prevent grass growing though.

Soil - Your choice if your using soil already in place is of good quality. Turning the soil and adding fertiliser is a good start. If its a kit being made then you will need to purchase that making sure its for a food garden 

Planting

Heigh - Width - Depth: Make sure your plant have enough space to grow.

Supports for plants

Be mindful of what you are planting and if it needs height. There are varies shaped stands for tomatoes, beans, peas, cucumbers, pumpkins, grapes and other plants. Also think about placement of the stands in the garden. 

Additives

Fertiliser - Sugar cane - Irrigation systems 

Food

Time to grow produce expected date to harvest. There are various tools for planting seeds or punnet plants. When planting remember to read the label for heigh of plant, distance to plant apart and expected time for harvest.
